Yo... My hip-hop nation... I am going out on a limb here and I will do my very own top 5 list of the best underrated hip-hop songs of all time...I was tempted of doing this after reading this I know some of you will disagree on some and I know that I WILL leave out some cats that are legends... feel free to argue, converse, comunicate, hell, even bitch if you want to... I love a good discussion about what I love and trust me... I love hip-hop, and I love to have my knowledge on the genre tested.
5- How I could Just Kill a Man - Cypress Hill
hell ANY song from their first album, specially Phunky Feel One and Hand on the Pump
4- Passing Me By - The Pharcyde
What, nobody in the Hip-Hop community has ever been in love and dissed by a girl? I love the beat and the rhymes...
3- Who Got Da Props - Black Moon
yes the Backpacker anthem... and if you are going to hate... backpackers love Hip-Hop more than anybody...
2- Camp Lo - Luchini (This is it)
I already talked about them here
1- Nas - Life's a bitch
With all the talks and arguements on Nasir Jone's legend status... I for one say he is one of the greatest, if not the greatest... Rakim to is yet to be topped... and most hip-hop critics accept Illmatic as one of the best albums... but this songfeatures one of the best verses in Hip-Hop and Nas wasn't the one I would like to direct your attention to... I am talking about AZ... his verse is pure lyrical magic, a great flow, some thought inducing rhymes and all around one of the greatest 16 bars ever... AZ never took off afterwards, eventhough his music is tight... he is yet to shine as one would expect after that song...
P.S.
I don't know if someone gives a fuck about my opinion but I will say this: The VH1 list... I am not quite pleased, although I am a bit satisfied with the top 5... Eric B & Rakim should have been AT LEAST top 10 and the fact that In da club or Get ur Freak On is above it is downright disrespectful... sorry 50 and Missy stans, but any Rakim song has done more for the genre as of impacting the way people rhymed... there's a reason why people call him the GOD mc (yes RAKIM, not Jigga)... I respect 50's achievements, I have his records, and I enjoy his music, but in no way, no way is In Da Club fucking in the same aesthetic level than Follow the Leader... Missy on the other hand, I don't like any of her music, well maybe just "The Rain" and mainly for the Timbaland beat... and for the "greatest rapper alive" discussion... Melle Mel, Rakim, Grandmaster Caz, Mos Def, Aesop Rock, Kool G. Rap, KRS-One, Big Daddy Kane, LL Cool J, Masta Ace are not dead... and calling Lil Wayne the greatest is like calling Lebron James the best b-ball player alive (Jordan is not dead, just retired)
Chaz's top 5 (underrated of all time)
